Springtime is just around the corner and I’ll bet I’m not the only one who will be rethinking my landscape plants. The only thing that will help my citrus trees is a chain saw. Now that riding weather should improve I will be checking my neighbors’ yards for living plants. Anything that made it through this winter should be a sure thing. This is the best time of the year to ride or walk the trails and, if you have not done so, remember to download a trail map available on our official website at www.pineridgeassn.com .
In the coming weeks the community barn will be undergoing sandblasting and repainting. This process could take a couple of weeks to complete. We will hope for good weather as the horses will have to stay out on pasture, for their health and safety, until this work is finished.
Parking on the road around the main arena will no longer be allowed except for immediate loading and unloading. No parking for any reason is allowed in the area across from the new notification board or on the rubber crossing mats. This is to address safety issues brought up by Pine Ridge Equestrian Committee members and should relieve their concerns about the placement of the notification board. Riders, please remember to always be aware of your surroundings in the arena areas just as you would be on the trails and crossings. Under Florida law your safety while riding is your responsibility.

FOR NEW RESIDENTS
Twice a year the Pine Ridge Civic Association welcomes New Residents to the Community. This has been a tradition, started by members of the Civic Association many years ago to get acquainted with and help inform new residents of activities within the community of Pine Ridge and of the Civic Association. We invite our new and old residents to gather with us, as well as our group activities, so newcomers can talk to each group or join an activity.
We encourage all our activities to have a table and display information and items they may be working on, or even pictures of their group. Refreshments will be served. Contact Chairperson Joan Kohler, at 527-2439, for more information or reservations.
March rains will bring frogs and toads to streams, ditches and to your ponds to breed. Snakes and other reptiles will become more active and be seen in your yards and gardens. March is also the time to clean out the bluebird nesting boxes as we start our 8th year of the “Bluebird Trail”.
One afternoon Joan and Al Lippman were driving east on Mustang when they saw a Bald Eagle sitting on a wire on the left side of the road just before the driveway to Dr. Choung’s office. There were six crows flying around it squawking trying to drive it away. Al pulled over to take a few pictures. Then the eagle flew and perched on top of a telephone pole on route 491 near the corner of the intersection. The crows were sitting near it on a wire along side of it as Joan and Al drove off. Sandra Bianco also encountered a huge eagle while driving on Mustang. It flew across the road right in front of her and landed on a pole.
Something in the sky made Bob Kohler look up while raking leaves in his front yard. It was the flight of the Whooping Cranes. He called his son Jim to come out and they watched as 10 endangered Whooping Cranes fly over following an ultralight aircraft. They are certainly fortunate to see them fly over their house each year and never have to go to the Dunnellon airport with a crowd of over 700 anxious spectators.
One morning when Larry and Laura Hook were sitting on their lanai they watched a female gray fox cross their back yard. A male fox was following her by about 30 feet. Larry wasn’t able to get a picture as his camera was in the house.
Beverly Christensen finally called a trapper as wild hogs were still digging up her lawn. She’s happy to report that he was able to trap two 300 lb hogs and hopes that these were the culprits doing the damage.
I’m sure most of you saw the great picture of the bobcat in the Visitor. It was taken by Linda Locascio of Bird’s Nest Dr. Linda said she kept snapping pictures from behind the lanai screen and it seemed like the cat was posing for her. He was in no hurry to leave and when he did, he took his time.
Remember the animals were here first. If you find them foraging on your property, scare them away if you must, but do not harm them. You are my eyes and ears, so please call 746-6819 or email me at hunbarb@tampabay.rr.com.
